1. The mental model
Tener literally means “to have.” Spanish also uses it for several ideas that English expresses with “to be.” Do not translate word by word. Learn the full Spanish chunk.

The goal is not to memorize an English translation. The goal is to make Spanish chunks automatic.

Special case: Ten cuidado means “Be careful.” Here, ten is the informal tú command of tener, not a present-tense form.
